Port Royal Sound Area Local Watersheds

What’s Special about My Local Watershed?

The Port Royal Sound Area is made up of a multitude of connected tidal creeks, rivers and other bodies of water with it's own special watershed. Our many waterways from headwaters of the Broad River to the May River to Fish Haul Creek create meandering branches of water, weaving in and out of vast expansions of Spartina grass salt marshes.  Every person in this beautiful area has many great reasons to protect and enhance their local watershed. Most people who live in the Port Royal Sound Area would agree their quality of life is tied to the quality of our local waters.

Although each of our local tidal creeks and rivers may seem like small contributors to the overall health of the greater Port Royal Sound, the cumulative effects from what we all do can have a large impact on our salt marsh ecosystem. Each of our many tidal creeks and rivers has its own local watershed (movement of water across a landscape to a larger body of water). By using smart water practices and taking action to enhance your local watershed, you enhance all of Port Royal Sound Area – the quality of water and quality of life for all.

The Port Royal Sound Foundation has begun to catalog and inventory what makes your local watershed special. If you are a resident or new to Beaufort County or Jasper County, we hope you will be impressed with the diversity of wildlife in our marine waters. There are many unique features that create habitats for animals and plants in our tidal creeks and rivers. These characteristics make Port Royal Sound Area a diverse and extremely important place along the Atlantic shoreline. We invite you to visit ten of our preliminary locations (listed on the drop down menu) so you may learn what makes these areas in Port Royal Sound special.
